The Story
Meet Jack, a UX Designer for Digital Solutions.
Before joining DNV, Jack worked in creative advertising and editorial design, before moving to the fire and rescue service as digital designer. His passion for UX design began while working on an app for firefighters delivering home fire safety:
“I created the first version of the app that I was proud of, took it to a group of firefighters to try out and it basically got torn to shreds – the buttons were too small and the app itself didn’t cater well for the way they worked. That was a real watershed moment for me and taught me the value of engaging earlier with end-users, even before putting any pixels on the screen,” said Jack.
When it was time to take the next step in his career, Jack was drawn to DNV’s purpose and global presence.
“I was attracted to DNV to work in the renewable sector.”
Jack’s time is split between UX strategy for Renewables & Ocean Structure portfolio and research and design for DNV’s next generation of Bladed software, a product that optimizes design and reduces risk for wind turbines, ultimately increasing renewable sources for global energy supply.
He believes delivering a quality user experience is a team effort, to do this Bladed has a customer-first, collaborative research and design practice:
“There is a collaborative approach to everything we do in the Bladed product team; we perform user research and design activities together as a team and over the last two years have built strong rapport with our customers, who’s openness and feedback we rely upon to focus and improve our product.”
As well as being involved in renewable energy industry projects, Jack also loves working at DNV for the unique perspective he gets from working with a broad range of people.
“I really enjoy DNV because it is a company that lives by its values and has a truly diverse, global culture. Not only do I get to learn from other people about things in the work domain, but also culturally from those with backgrounds different to mine.”
When Jack isn’t busy with work, he’s likely to be found renovating his century-old house that he and his girlfriend bought last year. Having already transformed the bathroom, and lounge, he is currently revamping the bedroom using creative solutions with DIY IKEA hacks.
Jack is also an outdoor enthusiast who loves snowboarding and hiking. In fact, last year, he and his girlfriend were hiking the challenging Via Ferrata route in the Dolomites. Back home, he organizes weekly football games, bringing together friends from work. So, whether he’s at home working on his house or outside playing sports, Jack is always busy doing something he loves.
