DNV’s strategic research unit, Group Research and Development (GRD), currently employs close to 130 talented researchers covering a wide range of topics of strategic importance to DNV. Our research focuses on areas where DNV has a strong presence, including Maritime and Energy, as well as emerging fields like Digital Assurance, Food & Ocean Systems, and Healthcare. https://www.dnv.com/research/index.html.
We conduct strategic and applied research for DNV to advance knowledge and demonstrate new technologies, working closely with academic and industry partners. We are a diverse group of researchers of different educational backgrounds, ages and nationalities. Our largest locations are in Norway (Oslo and Trondheim), but we also have research units in the UK, continental Europe, and Asia.
DNV launched a new trainee programme in August 2023, based in GRD and executed in close cooperation with DNV’s business areas, with new trainee groups starting in August 2024 and 2025. We are now looking for candidates for our 2026 programme, which will have the following key focus areas:
- Assurance and risk management of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Assurance and Risk management of data-driven approaches to gain new insights from data, models, and simulations. Our focus is to build trust in AI-enabled industrial systems. Our application areas cover maritime, energy, healthcare, aquaculture, and biodiversity
- Business models and digital transformation: Using AI-driven analytics and innovative intelligence approaches to explore digitalization and industry transformation trends, enabling the design of novel, future-ready business models. Our work focuses on understanding and driving digital and AI transformation across DNV’s core industries.
- Maritime: Advancing product assurance of autonomous navigation systems and AI-enabled systems to support increased levels of automation and integration of complex systems with data/information management on maritime vessels.

What to expect as a research trainee in Group Research and Development:
- A 2-year trainee programme with 3 rotations (work periods) of 8 months each
- The rotations will be both within GRD and DNV’s business areas
- Main office in Oslo/Høvik (or potentially Trondheim) as programme base, with at least one rotation at a different location (abroad or in another office in Norway)
- A great opportunity to explore applied research in familiar topics while gaining experience in related areas and services
- A possibility to work with highly skilled scientists and engineers in different settings
- After completing the trainee programme, you will get a relevant position within DNV – either in GRD or in a business area, depending on business needs and your own preference
