DNV Power Systems’ Advisory group is seeking a Principal Power System Engineer, in the Renewables & Power Grids group. Our team provides creative, cost effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in the power generation, transmission/distribution systems and hyper scaler loads. The principal engineer must demonstrate vision and drive and be passionate about contributing to the growth and evolution of the Power Systems Advisory business in North America. The ideal candidate will be aware of market opportunities where we can differentiate and innovate, and they will manage commercial projects, delivering technical insight and delighting customers with excellent customer service.

This role is based at our DNV office in Toronto (ON), presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. What You’ll Do

Project and Program Leadership:

  • Coordinate, plan, and resource multiple projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to budgetary constraints
  • Coordinate interconnected projects to ensure alignment with overarching business goals and client objectives
  • Work in collaboration with department leadership on projects and programs, including those you undertake
  • Collaborate with experts across various disciplines to provide holistic solutions to clients. This includes working with engineers, analysts, and other professionals
  • Promote, monitor, and ensure that the team's work meets DNV's quality standards and best practices
  • Author, review, or approve project proposals and deliverables
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts including tool development, process refinement, digitization efforts and lessons learned activities
  • Mentor other team members and guide them through tasks

Client Management:

  • Develop a deep understanding of specific client needs, expectations, and challenges, particularly with key accounts utilizing both onshore wind, offshore wind, transmission line, and other technologies
  • Adapt approach to align with specific client requirements, ensuring tailored solutions
  • Bring greater standardization on how we contextualize risk in a way that our customers and internal experts can digest

Technical Expertise:

  • Maintain and continually enhance deep domain knowledge in the renewable energy sector
  • Provide clients with actionable insights and recommendations that contribute to their business improvement processes
  • Advance team and industry thought leadership

Business Development:

  • Identify synergies for customers when working on combining onshore/offshore wind, transmission line, and other technologies
  • Identify new business opportunities, interpret market trends, and contribute to the expansion of the company's client base
  • Engage in networking and relationship-building activities focusing on strategic clients
  • Author, review, and/or approve project proposals keeping in mind departmental goals and customer requirements

About you

What is Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience to include:
    • In-depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy
    • Hands-on experiences with power-system tools PSS/E, TARA, PSLF, Power-world, and PSCAD
    • Direct work experience in transmission and/or distribution planning related analyses in transmission planning and/or resource interconnection
    • Knowledge of North American RTO/ISO markets grid interconnection and corresponding planning practices including resource integration studies, NERC standards and ISO/RTO resource interconnection model requirements
  • Experience in driving strategy and implementing business plans
  • Experience in the context of engineering, estimation, construction, development, origination, consulting, project management, technology, asset management, or finance
  • Business development experience
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment and collaborate with clients and team members on project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to rent and drive a car and travel on public conveyances when required
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills

What is Preferred

  • Active PE License
  • Graduate level degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience with power system analysis software packages including PSS/E, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN, PSLF, CYME, ETAP, Synergie Electric and/or DIGSILENT, EMTP-RV, PSLF, AUTOCAD AUTODesk
  • Track record of project management and/or successful completion of project management related training
  • Minimum three (8+) years of experience in resource interconnection working with a consultant performing studies in areas such as resource planning, generation interconnection, transmission planning and grid resiliency studies with ISO, utility firms
  • Working knowledge of automation scripts such as Python
  • Experience performing one or more of the studies; Power flow studies, Transient Stability studies, Resource planning studies, forward looking analysis, Security constraint economic dispatch (SCED) analysis
