Rui - Senior Surveyor

Rui shares why he chose to return to DNV and how the company’s learning culture, international environment, and focus on safety continue to shape his professional journey.

The Story

Returning to DNV with renewed purpose and passion for maritime innovation.

A return shaped by experience

After several years working outside DNV, Rui decided to return to the company and continue his path as a Surveyor. Coming back felt familiar and meaningful, a place where he could use his experience while continuing to grow in an environment he trusted.

He often explains it simply: “I realised how much I missed this place.”

A knowledge‑driven and industry‑leading workplace

One of the main reasons Rui returned was DNV’s strong focus on knowledge and expertise. As an industry‑leading organization, DNV provides access to the latest technologies and global trends. This includes exposure to areas such as alternative fuels, cyber security, decarbonization, and AI applications. These learning opportunities reflect DNV’s emphasis on continuous growth and staying at the forefront of innovation, as described in the EVP narrative.

Rui enjoys working with specialists from different fields and values the experience sharing that happens every day. “My view has expanded so much. There is always something new to learn,” he says. He appreciates that this knowledge does not stay within the company but is shared across the maritime industry, strengthening DNV’s role as a trusted voice.

A friendly environment with global perspectives

Rui is also happy to reconnect with colleagues, both familiar and new. The working environment, shaped by people from different countries and backgrounds, creates space for open dialogue and sharing ideas. Inside the offices, conversations flow naturally, and colleagues exchange insights from different parts of the world.

He values how people are encouraged to use their strengths and grow in different directions, whether as Surveyors, Engineers, or future leaders. “People here are respected for who they are and what they bring,” he says.

This collaborative and international atmosphere reflects the tone of DNV’s global culture, also seen in storytelling from company events and initiatives.

A workplace built on safety and resilience

For Rui, safety is at the heart of the Surveyor role, especially when working in complex newbuilding environments. He appreciates DNV’s clear and consistent commitment to safety and resilience across all levels, ensuring that work is never rushed at the expense of health or well‑being.

He also values how the company supports holistic well‑being through activities such as outings and annual gatherings, helping employees recharge and stay resilient throughout their daily challenges.

“Safety comes first, always. It gives me confidence in the work I do,” he explains.

Looking ahead

Returning to DNV has given Rui a renewed sense of direction. With access to leading expertise, a supportive global community, and a workplace committed to safety and growth, he feels motivated to continue contributing to the maritime industry.

“I’m grateful for the chance to grow again,” he says. “It feels good to be back.”
