Ge - Piping Plan Approval Engineer

Starting a career in a new industry can feel daunting, but for Ge, the support, trust and learning opportunities he found at DNV helped him build confidence, expand his expertise and find a strong sense of belonging.

The Story

Building a new career path

When Ge joined DNV, he was stepping into unfamiliar territory. With a master's degree in Power Engineering, his academic background was not directly linked to the maritime industry. What attracted him to DNV was the opportunity to work alongside world-class experts in an international environment and continue learning every day.

“Joining DNV gave me the chance to explore a completely new field,” says Ge. “I was excited to broaden my knowledge, challenge myself and gain a more global perspective.”

Even before officially joining the company, Ge completed a one-month internship. During that time, he met experienced professionals, supportive colleagues and fellow graduates who were all eager to share knowledge and help one another succeed.

Learning from experts around the world

Today, Ge works as a Piping Plan Approval Engineer, reviewing technical documentation and applying industry rules and standards. Like many people joining a new industry, he faced a steep learning curve.

“At the beginning, I often felt unsure when working with unfamiliar rules, systems and drawings,” he says. “I didn't have a strong shipbuilding background, so there was a lot to learn.”

What made the difference was the support he received from the people around him. His manager encouraged him to ask questions and reassured him that he would never face challenges alone.

To help accelerate his development, Ge participated in individual training sessions with colleagues from different disciplines, giving him a broader understanding of the maritime industry and strengthening his technical foundation.

Trust, guidance and professional growth

A key part of Ge's journey has been the relationship with his mentor. Soon after joining, he was trusted with real project work as part of his on-the-job training.

“My mentor gave me the opportunity to work on general drawings early on. Whenever I have questions, they take the time to explain things clearly and review my work carefully.”

Through this guidance, Ge has developed a deeper understanding of technical rules, piping systems and engineering drawings, while also learning how to communicate effectively with customers.

“I've learned that being a DNV engineer is about more than technical expertise. It's also about being clear, professional and building trust with customers.”

Finding a sense of belonging

Beyond the technical learning, Ge says the people around him have played a major role in helping him settle into both his role and a new city.

“My colleagues genuinely cared about how I was adapting. They asked about my commute, my accommodation and how I was settling in. Small things like inviting me to lunch made a big difference.”

As someone who was still building confidence in speaking English professionally, Ge appreciated the patience and encouragement he received from colleagues.

When you join a network of global experts

For Ge, DNV is a place where curiosity is encouraged, knowledge is shared and people are empowered to grow. Working alongside experts from around the world has allowed him to develop new skills, build confidence and contribute to meaningful work.

“Every day, I have opportunities to learn from talented people and expand my understanding of the industry,” he says. “The trust, support and opportunities I've received have helped me find my place at DNV.”
