About the role

Graduate 2025 – Fire Safety & Life-Saving in Hamburg

Are you ready to kickstart your career in DNV’s Fire Safety & Life-Saving section? We are seeking a Graduate who will have finished their studies in 2024/2025 to join our team in 2025!

We are now looking for a graduate to strengthen our Fire Safety & Life-Saving section in Germany. You will be part of an engaged group driven by people’s competence and motivation to help and support our customers through consistent delivery of high-quality services.

The Approval Centre Europe within Maritime Ship Classification consists of six production departments, located across three different locations (Gdynia, Poland; Hamburg, Germany and Oslo (Høvik), Norway). The main delivery from the Approval organization is approval, verification and certification services for different maritime related assets in accordance with our rules.

As a member of Approval Centre Europe, you act in a professional, competent, and service oriented environment and in return receive good possibilities to enhance your personal competencies and expertise, and to build a strong network with colleagues across locations.

Section/Task description

We are recruiting in the section “Fire Safety & Life-Saving”. You will be part of a section that is responsible for approval of fire safety and life-saving arrangements, equipment and installations onboard all types of ships, from the largest passenger/ cruise ships to fishing vessels, HSLC and other special ships. The section covers both new-building and conversion approval, together with support to ships in operation.

Our responsibilities span over a broad range of tasks which provides a great deal of diversity as well as deep insight into statutory matters. The focus on decarbonization, digitalization and automation also influences our work. Fire safety and live-saving aspects related to introduction of alternative fuels (such as batteries and gas fuel) are some examples. Being responsible for DNV’s governing documents for fire safety and life-saving (e.g. class rules) implies development of new and existing rules. This is done in cooperation with other technical disciplines internally, with Flag Administrations and other contributors in the maritime industry. This work provides our section with deep insight into DNV rules and class notations, different maritime codes and international industry standards and regulations.

As of today, the section consists of 13 highly competent employees in all age groups, located in Hamburg and Høvik, with a passion for the safety of ships and ship systems, and we need to prepare for the future competence need within our discipline.

The work tasks of an approval engineer in our section typically include, but is not limited to:

  • Plan approval of fire safety and life-saving arrangements and installations for all types of ships
  • Support to our field organization and clients
  • Development and Maintenance of rules and instructions as the section has a delegated responsibility for defining DNV’s technical standards within our area
  • Pre-contract support and marketing
