About the role

Role Purpose

The Marine Consultant will provide technical, project management, and client support across a range of marine environmental consultancy projects. The role involves delivering high-quality technical assessments, supporting project delivery, and contributing to business growth initiatives.

The successful candidate will have experience in marine environmental assessment and be capable of managing project workstreams with increasing autonomy while developing specialist technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery

  • Prepare and contribute to marine environmental assessments, including:
    • Supporting Technical Reports for offshore wind, subsea cables, oil and gas decommissioning, aquaculture
    • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapters
    • Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)
    • Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments
    • Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) assessments
  • Analyse and interpret environmental data, including sediment physico-chemical properties and macrobenthic communities, seabed imagery and water quality datasets.
  • Produce clear, technically robust reports, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, guidance and industry standards.
  • Undertake quality assurance reviews of technical outputs prior to submission.

Team and Knowledge Development

  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Support graduate consultants and early-career staff through mentoring and technical guidance.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant environmental legislation, policy and industry developments.
  • Assist with development of internal guidance documents, methodologies and best-practice procedures.

Project Management

  • Manage small to medium-sized projects and technical work packages from inception to completion.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to client expectations.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support preparation of project proposals and tenders.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients and regulatory authorities.

Business Development

  • Contribute to tender submissions and proposal development.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business and cross-selling of services.
  • Support development of new service offerings and technical capabilities.

About you

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in Marine Biology, Marine Environmental Science, Oceanography, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
  • Relevant professional experience in marine environmental consultancy, regulatory agencies, research institutions or related sectors.
  • Knowledge of UK marine licensing and environmental legislation.
  • Strong report writing, project management and communication skills.
  • Commercially aware, organised and capable of managing competing priorities.
  • Passionate about delivering practical, high-quality environmental solutions.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in offshore wind, subsea cable, ports and harbours, aquaculture, metocean data (e.g., ADCP) or oil and gas projects.
  • Experience with benthic ecology and marine survey interpretation.
  • GIS skills and spatial data analysis experience.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (CIEEM, IMarEST or equivalent).
