About the role

We are currently seeking to employ a qualified candidate for the position of FACTS Engineer Intern (or the “Candidate”) for Technical Services in the global HVDC and FACTS unit, to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As part of DNV’s FlexGrid-HV in the South Africa region, the Candidate will work along with other technical professionals in the global team as well as the DNV Energy Systems group to provide technical consulting services and support business development activities. The6 months duration internship will focus on 3 main areas which will be discussed & agreed upon with the candidate.

(1) Support & learn Project Management: an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of FACTS and reactive power compensation project management. This is a dynamic and challenging position that helps the project management team within an organisation. As an intern in this role, you will be responsible for supporting various project management activities, ensuring the smooth execution of projects, and contributing to their successful completion. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in project management, system studies, and systems engineering and develop valuable skills in a professional setting. Main activities include:

  • Assist project managers in planning, organising, and coordinating project activities.
  • Assist FACTS project engineers in system studies, design reviews, preparation of technical documentation such as specifications, design reviews, drawings, planning, organising, and coordinating project activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather project requirements and ensure effective communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Help create project plans, timelines, and schedules, and monitor progress against established milestones.
  • Conduct research and gather data related to project objectives, risks, and constraints.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project documentation, including status reports, meeting minutes, and project deliverables.
  • Assist in identifying project issues, risks, and dependencies, and propose solutions or mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate and facilitate project meetings, including scheduling, agenda preparation, and capturing meeting outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of project management processes and methodologies.
  • Provide general administrative support to the project management team, such as document management, file organization, and data entry.

(2) Support & learn Bid Management: anexciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of reactive power compensation and in specific FACTS devices such as STATCOMs. As an intern in this role, you will be providing support to the bid management team, assisting in the preparation and submission of proposals for renewable advisory services. This position offers valuable exposure to the bidding process and the FACTS sector, allowing you to contribute to the growth of clean energy initiatives. Main activities include:

  • Assist the bid management team in coordinating and preparing bids for FACTS services for STATCOM and other related technologies.
  • Conduct research on potential project opportunities, including market trends, regulations, and competitor analysis.
  • Support the development of bid documentation, including technical proposals, financial proposals, and project schedules.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, finance, legal, and business development, to gather relevant information and ensure comprehensive bid submissions.
  • Assist in the preparation of bid presentations and participate in bid review meetings.
  • Help maintain bid tracking systems and databases, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Support the analysis of bid outcomes and lessons learned, contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of bid management processes and tools.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, policies, and regulations.

(3) Support & learn technical consulting:excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in the FACTS/STATCOM/reactive power compensation industry and contribute to technical consulting projects. As an intern in this role, you will support the technical consultancy team in providing expertise and advice to clients in the FACTS/STATCOM. This position offers exposure to a wide range of FACTS/STATCOM technologies and projects, allowing you to develop essential skills and knowledge in the field. Main activities include:

  • Assist the technical consultancy team in conducting feasibility studies and assessments for FACTS projects, including STATCOM
  • Support the collection and analysis of technical data, such as site characteristics, resource assessments, and STATCOM efficiency estimates.
  • Assist in the evaluation and optimisation of FACTS technologies and systems
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for clients, outlining findings, insights, and potential solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, project managers, and business developers, to gather and integrate technical inputs for consulting projects
  • Support the development of financial models and cost-benefit analyses for FACTS projects.
  • Assist in researching emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory frameworks related to FACTS/STATCOM.
  • Help maintain project documentation, data repositories, and knowledge management systems.
  • Participate in client meetings, workshops, and presentations as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of technical consultancy processes and methodologies.

This role reporting to the FlexGrid-HV FACTS Team Lead will focus on supporting our technical team in delivering our services to our existing customers and supporting bid managers preparing proposals worldwide. After completing the internship, depending on performance and market conditions you may obtain permanent employment with a fair remuneration plan in South Africa.

About you

  • Master / Bachelor’s in Power Systems, Electrical, Engineering or equivalent from a recognised university.
  • Strong interest in FACTS/STATCOM technologies.
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software, such as PSCAD, Digsilent, PSSe, Excel, MATLAB, or Python, is a plus.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to delivering accurate and high-quality work.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing project requirements and client expectations.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • A positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and a strong work ethic.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, reactive power compensation technologies, project development, and industry standards is a plus.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and tools is a plus.
