About the role

Do you want to participate in the advancement of energy storage across the industry?

We’re looking for a talented Energy Storage Controls Expert, focused expert to join us in working on a variety of energy storage projects throughout the US and Canada as part of the Energy Storage Technology Team. You will work on a variety of unique energy storage projects that include technologies such as lithium-ion batteries. You will be exposed to cutting-edge technology developed by some of the most well-known industry manufacturers, investors, developers, and integrators.

DNV’s Energy Storage team is the premier provider of independent engineering services to support the development, diligence, financing, and construction of storage and solar and solar + storage projects in North America, and our staff are viewed as experts and thought leaders in the industry. The primary functions of this position include providing technical consulting and advisory services to battery storage manufacturers and project developers to support the growth and maturity in the industry.

This role is based at any of our DNV offices in the US, presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.

What You’ll Do

  • Review and assess cutting-edge battery technology and controls systems across utility, C&I, and residential scale systems
  • Review functionality of the Battery Management Systems (BMS) and its interaction with external systems such as the Energy Management System (EMS) or microgrid controller
  • Review BESS control system, EMS, supervisory and data acquisition (SCADA) system architecture, functionalities and integration within plant level control, grid-facing platforms, and the broader installation site to compare against current and emerging industry best practices
  • Clearly communicate advanced technical concepts such as controls logic and strategy to a broader audience
  • Manage projects and/or project tasks, executing deliverables
  • Meet key performance indicators individually and for the group
  • Interact with customers in person or via email, phone or video
  • Analyze and interpret technical data and documents
  • Collaborate in the development of new business and projects
  • Present or aid in the development of presentation materials for conferences and workshops
  • Support the development of new proposals for advisory or testing work
  • Provide input on strategic planning and marketing decisions

The actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. For the states of California, Washington, New York, Washington, D.C., Illinois, and Maryland only, the starting pay range for this role is $105,000 - $155,000.

About you

What is Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in controls and SCADA systems for energy products or projects, preferably BESS related
  • Experience with Energy Management Systems (EMS), grid interconnection standards, and data monitoring and control platforms
  • Knowledge of networking infrastructure, including Ethernet, fiber optics, and industrial wireless communication technologies.
  • Comfort with interpreting, analyzing, and synthesizing data
  • Experience being part of collaborative project team(s) and being a supportive and proactive team member
  • Eager to work in a collaborative environment
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Interpersonal skills, and solid speaking and presentation skills
  • An eye for detail and desire to deliver a quality work product
  • Maintain a customer-focused, consultative approach to projects and customer needs
  • Work within expected deadlines, while being adaptive to changing scope or customer needs
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10-15% of the time
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and background screening

What is Preferred

  • Advanced degree in an Engineering discipline or related field
  • Experience in at least one of the following:
    • Battery Management Systems (BMS) functionalities;
    • Networking protocols such as Modbus, DNP3 and IEC61850; or
    • Industrial control hardware, including PLCs, RTUs, and industrial controllers
  • Additional experience with:
    • Control software development
    • Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud for system integration and performance monitoring
    • Commissioning SCADA and control systems for utility-scale BESS projects
    • Cybersecurity best practices for control systems
    • Data analytics related to the operation and maintenance of energy systems
    • Business development
    • Project or product management experience
