DNV’s Energy Systems’ Asset Operations Team is seeking a Principal Wind Turbine Technology Engineer whose primary role will be to help customers enhance the performance and reliability of wind power plants through comprehensive studies, investigations, and data-driven analysis. This role offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of wind energy technology, contributing directly to the evolution of wind turbine performance and reliability, while also growing alongside an expanding team that embraces cutting-edge tools and methodologies.

The ideal candidate will possess strong engineering and data analytics skills, knowledge of wind turbine design and operation (particularly in the area of blade design and performance), and field experience to bolster their knowledge beyond theory. As part of a dynamic team, which is serving an evolving market space, this position provides the chance to shape the future of wind turbine performance and reliability, making a meaningful impact on the global renewable energy landscape.

This position will be based at our Calgary office presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend at least three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide thought leadership on wind turbine technology, shaping methodologies, best practices, and technical standards across projects and contributing to the broader industry dialogue.
  • Use a combination of fundamental engineering principles and practical judgement to support customers with a range of technical challenges.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, providing technical guidance, reviewing work, and building capability in engineering judgement, analysis, and client engagement.
  • Contribute to and lead wind turbine technology assessments, technical due diligence, reporting, and client communication.
  • Manipulate and analyze wind turbine SCADA, meteorological, and operational data to generate insights on reliability, performance, root cause failure analysis, and life extension.
  • Remain current on wind turbine technology, engaging with OEMs to understand new products, updates, and technical details.
  • Lead and participate in root cause analysis (RCA) investigations, including field inspections, documentation, causality mapping, and engineering calculations.
  • Review RCAs performed by OEMs or third parties to assess completeness, risks, and mitigations.
  • Perform field and factory inspections of wind turbines and components for construction monitoring, operational assessments, manufacturing quality, and failure investigations (up to ~20% travel).
  • Drive continuous improvement (Operational Excellence) initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve quality, consistency, and efficiency across projects and workflows.
  • Leverage and advance digital tools, data pipelines, and analytics capabilities to enhance technical delivery, scalability, and insight generation.
  • Maintain, manipulate, and visualize large datasets; contribute to development and enhancement of tools and interfaces to improve efficiency and outcomes.
  • Prepare high-quality client deliverables including technical reports, presentations, and calls, ensuring clarity of methods, findings, and recommendations.
  • Lead proposal development and support business development activities including discovery, scoping, and bidding.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and customers to define scopes, budgets, and timelines, providing and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Manage small to medium projects in line with DNV processes, including resources, budgets, schedules, and quality.
  • Cultivate strong, trusted relationships with colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Support internal service and capability development across teams and regions.
  • Take ownership of work while contributing effectively within a team environment.

About you

What is Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in a similar role.
  • At least 5 years of experience focused on utility-scale wind turbine blades.
  • Willingness to learn about and work on different aspects of wind technology as customer requirements and the market evolves over time.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, or similar; familiarity with Python programming is preferred.
  • Detailed understanding of wind turbine technology including design principles, loads, and controls.
  • Familiarity with wind turbine operational data and relevant performance metrics.
  • Strong analytical background and ability to apply mathematical reasoning to physical and statistical problems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Experience in customer-facing roles.
  • High level of integrity and respect for confidentiality.
  • Strong English language written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly in written, visual, and verbal formats.
    • (The employee would be required to draft and review internal documents in English to be used throughout North America.)
