The Story

Bringing new thinking back to DNV

Time away from DNV has definitely been time well spent for Frank. He’s not only gained experience and skills in different areas, he clearly has a different mindset since returning from the logistics industry.

What did you do during your first stint here?

I initially joined GL (Germanischer Lloyd) in February 2012 as Financial Controller, APA. So I was here during the 2013 merger, after which I took on the role of Financial Controller, Greater China. It was a great period for me, especially as I was there at the early days when Oracle was being implemented.

Where did you at did you do during your time away?

I moved to an international supply chain company, to focus on an SAP project that spanned China, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico and the USA. I had to learn new skills, and adjust to the new culture. Everything was complicated by COVID. As time went on, I couldn’t help but think ‘I’m a financial controller, but a lot of things aren’t controllable!’.

Why did you come back?

The travelling at the logistics firm took its toll, and I always knew DMV puts an emphasis on a good work-life balance. I saw an opportunity on LinkedIn and was very happy to re-join in Business Assurance. My recent experiences complemented the work: I now have a deeper understanding of ERP and CRM systems and costs versus benefits.

When have you felt at the heart of it at DNV?

My position isn’t just about financial controls. I need to dig into the truth of matters, and discover the story behind the figures. Elsewhere, you just focus on what you do. At DNV, I’m free to add value and improve other areas than my own.

What do you like most about working here?

I’ve always said that ‘we care, we dare, and we share’. As a company, we have a lot to focus on. Targets to meet. But you can do things your way, as you know you’ll be supported by your line manager. It’s cheesy, but there’s also a genuine family feel to working here.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I’m focused on mastering the Business Assurance finance perspective now. But longer term, as a leader in controlling functions, I’ll be looking to introduce improvements – working to find innovations and methods that’ll help us work smarter, and provide the business with better, more insightful information.
