The Story

Becoming a trusted business partner

Shi Mingjun, Surveyor at the Nanjing Station of Maritime Region in Greater China, shares his journey as newbuilding project manager in the PCTC market boom.

Since 2021, there has been a large boom in the Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) newbuilding orders, with DNV securing a dominant market share. “I’m very proud to have the platform in DNV to grow professionally as a PCTC NB project manager, collaborate with customers on landmark projects and work with excellent teams to deliver exceptional results,” says Shi.

The 7,000 CEU PCTC project marked the beginning of the current PCTC market boom and established a benchmark for a Chinese-built PCTC vessel for a Japanese shipowner. “It was my first time working as a project manager for PCTC ship type” says Shi. “From day one to project close, I focused on strengthening the collaboration between the shipyard, designer and owner, as well as facilitating workshops tailored for the new trends on PCTC ship type, such as gas fueled LNG installation, nautical safety, battery and hybrid system. It enhanced my technical expertise to bridge DNV’s knowledge with customer needs.”

Thanks to strong teamwork, Shi received outstanding feedback with the owner praising both the shipyard’s performance and DNV’s customer-centric approach.

Advancing capabilities

BYD, the world-leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, asked DNV to design a new ship featuring cutting-edge green technologies and the ability to accommodate up to 9,200 cars. Key challenges included the owner’s expectations and a shipyard advanced production. “By deepening our understanding of the owner’s operational requirements and leveraging DNV’s expertise to mitigate risks through close collaboration with the yard, we successfully managed to go beyond both owner and yard expectations,” explains Shi “The first vessel was successfully delivered about half year ahead of original schedule and just embarked on a journey to Brazil.”

Growing professionally

Throughout all of Shi’s PCTC projects he is continuously improving himself and the team, as well as colleagues from different units involved in PCTC ship type: “I established a ‘PCTC knowledge-sharing platform’ where we all can exchange insights, lessons learned, and best practices from various PCTC newbuild projects. Additionally, I work closely with shipyards and designers on their strategy to optimize PCTC designs, reinforcing DNV’s role as a trusted technical partner.”

Through these experiences and the supportive culture at DNV, Shi can collaborate and communicate openly and continuous strength my project management skills. “I’m very grateful to DNV for providing me with this valuable opportunity to grow professionally and personally."
